Whos Got It Better Than Us

By Patrice McCoy

When watching the news recently, there have been many stories discussing the problems with American society. The United States, considered the land of opportunity, has slowly begun to be perceived as sub-par. This shift from a powerful and successful country to one that is limping along licking its wounds should be put into perspective. When someone asks whos got it better than us? The response should be swift and concise.

Consider the financial markets found in New York. What makes Wall Street work is that an everyday average person can invest their money in one of the largest stock markets. It matters not what the person does for a living, where they are from, or how much they have to invest. Every person can participate if they choose.

Then there is the chance to own a home. Property ownership has been coined as the American Dream. Yet, any person who has steady employment and money for a small down payment can become a homeowner. To encourage this practice, mortgage companies offer financing. While there have been recent housing problems, many people continue to make owning a home a reality.

The vast number of career paths open to a person is another unique system. Within nearly every industry, there is the opportunity for advancement. By moving higher within an established system, employees are able to make salary increases and change positions. When starting at the entry level, it is recognized that hard work will pay off. No employer can discriminate against an employee on the basis of race, religious affiliation or gender.

Another fantastic facet is public education. All children are guaranteed a free public education from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Every child gets the exact same opportunity. On top of the education, students from poverty get free or reduced cost breakfasts and lunches. If students are disabled in any manner, they still get the same education and have special services at no cost to their family.

After public education, any student can attend a post-secondary institution. Community colleges, technical colleges, trade schools, and universities are open to any student who has the desire and ability. There is even financial assistance, grants, scholarships, and loans that can help provide monetary support for attendance, supplies, books, fees, and housing.

Some individuals prefer a different option all together. Those with an entrepreneurial bent are limited only by their own personal drive. The country's financial base is built upon small business owners. These creative individuals can build their business to whatever level they choose. In fact, many small business owners today work from their home computer. The surge of Internet businesses has created a market that had not been considered previously.

Instead of listening to the radio, watching television, or reading magazines which depict American society as slowly crumbling, focus on the many qualities that make the country unique. While every country has its own set of problems, a confident response to whos got it better than us is simple. No one.
