Tips for Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions

By Vito La Fata

Did you make New Year's resolutions this year? If so, how are you doing with them? Are things going well? Lots of people make resolutions, but then they fail to keep them for more than a few weeks, if that long. If you are one of these people, then you would probably like some tips for keeping your resolutions.

Share them. Do not keep your resolutions a secret. The more people who know, the more people you have keeping you accountable. This is a powerful system! For example, perhaps you want to run at least four half marathons this year.

If so, then register for those races and then make your plans public. Tell your friends and put it on Facebook. Ask people to keep you accountable so that you will stay on track. If others are watching you and asking for progress updates, you will have a better chance at success.

Making a list is another way to help yourself be successful with your New Year's resolutions. Get some paper and jot down what you want to accomplish in 2013. The key is to make sure they are reachable and reasonable. Do not try to lose a huge amount of weight in just a couple of weeks, for example. After you have made a list, do not forget about it! Look at it daily.

If you slip up in your resolutions, do not let yourself get mired down in frustration and end up quitting. Just quickly get back up. The key is to keep trying. Everybody messes up sometimes. If you did not fall down occasionally, you would not be human! Just keep pushing forward.

Reward yourself. That sounds great doesn't it? When you meet a goal it is important to celebrate your amazing accomplishment. Be proud of yourself! However, make sure the reward supports your new habit. For example, you would not want to reward a weight loss goal with desserts. Opt for something like a pedicure or new running shoes.
